The Power of INSTEAD

Exploring Solutions through Curiosity & Creativity

If we are facing and analysing our problem to find a solution and not finding one - why not try something else instead - turning, facing and visualizing what we want instead of the problem? Not ignoring the past or problem which is still there but now in the small rear-view mirror. What we want and value instead becomes our focus through the big windscreen clearly ahead of us. Now we can focus and experiment with our resources on how to achieve it. Looking for the smallest sign that what we are trying is working and doing more of that ... if not ... what else might work ... and trying that.

COACHING - THE VALUE

Why is coaching valueable?

Coaching is a versatile tool that can be used in a variety of situations and when used efficiently it can have meaningful and positive impact

A Partner

  • You are not alone and have someone that can support you

  • You can speak and verbalize your thoughs and feelings and someone listens

  • Having a partner can reveal blindspots in your thinking, or when your thinking gets stuck in a pattern

  • Having a partner can increase motivation and help you stay accountable

  • A partner makes things less predictable and reflects life more realistically

Quiet Time & Safe Space

  • You have quiet time and a safe space away from the rush and noise of daily life

  • You can reflect and just let the dust settle and see what becomes clear

  • Get in touch with yourself again and regain your inherent ability and confidence to navigate whatever you are experiencing

Opportunity to Explore & Grow

  • To explore freely and creatively how you think, feel and behave about any aspect of yourself or your life

  • You can take advantage of the insights to grow or change by making adjustments to your thinking, thoughts and behaviour

  • You can gain clarity, perspective, direction, get unstuck, move forward or realize you are doing too much

COACHING - AREAS OF VALUE

Where is coaching applicable?

Coaching can be particularly useful in the following key areas

Everywhere

School • University

Career • Professional • Work

Coaching is NOT "Coaching" and the Coach is not really a "Coach"

Newcomers to "coaching" or specific "Life coaching" are sometimes surprised to find that it differs in some key respects from "Sports" coaching where the commonly accepted term has its origin and draws its inspiration from. They expect the coach to be the expert on the topic of "Life" and to give them advice or the "answers" and to instruct and train them on how to become successful at "living" in a similar way a sports coach trains an athlete to win an Olympic Gold medal. Coaching is also a collaborative process but where you are the sole expert on living your life and despite the challenges your face you are-ABLE and cap-ABLE to find the solutions to these and any other issue that might arise. There are exceptions but most "coaches" view their role solely as skilled listeners, facilitators, collaborators or partners that support you in the process of identifying and exploring possible solutions (Ask-Seek-Find-Create).

About the Person behind Instead

I am neither a Coach nor a Guru

Photo The Person behind Instead

I have to start by re-emphasizing that I don't view myself as a "coach" in the traditional sense of the word "life coach" or "coaching" but rather as your solutions facilitator or thinking partner skilled in having solution-focused or future-oriented conversations. I am also not a Guru with all life's answers whom you have to follow, or whose bathwater you have to drink to become enlightened. I am a simple guy from humble beginnings who wants to find meaning and satisfaction in, and make sense of, what we call "life" and "living". I often struggle and make mistakes but I try to avoid it, am curious to understand why, learn from others, find solutions and share them so future generations can hopefully benefit as well.
I'll share below a little of my background, and experiences during phases of my life to help you understand how they shaped me and contributed to my motivation and preparedness to help and encourage you and others to seek and find solutions as well. Most importantly I hope it hits close to home that we are not, and don't have to be perfect even in our quest for solutions:

Prefect but not Perfect

At school I was selected as prefect in the student representative body - in primary school as head boy and in secondary school as co-deputy head boy. I received a number of academic awards and also played in the 1st rugby teams. I mention it to make a point about the expectation and impression that you have to be, or are "perfect" if you are a "prefect", a leader or doing well in something. You can lead and receive awards and at the same time deal with a hidden internal mental struggle. Equally true is that even if you have internal struggles, you can find ways to manage them and still perform and achieve many things. After completing school in 1989 my initial career vision was to practice as Psychologist and so I set off to achieve my Masters Degree in Psychology. I mainly wanted to help people and prevent any suffering but also wanted to help myself in the process as I was dealing with a lack of self-confidence, shyness and experienced intense anxiety in social situations. I completed my BA and BA( Hons) degrees and started working as Psychometrist for a Psychologist in private practice.

The Computer Bug

While I was studying I got "slightly" distracted from my humanistic vision by technology when my father brought home an ICL ELF personal computer and a friend introduced me to the Internet and HTML. The bug actually infected me years earlier in primary school when I asked him to buy me a Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer which my sister and I, mainly used to play games with, but also introduced me to programming.
In 1998 I switched study direction to a Bsc in Computer Science which resulted in a 26-year detour through the IT landscape.
I can't blame technology solely for the diversion though, as bouts of anxiety and lack of self-confidence continued and contributed as well. I also justified my decision with the excuse that I needed life experience before I could become a good psychologist and give advice to people about their lives.
When I encountered Flash Animations on websites I was facinated with its potential and it triggered a brief exploration of my "creative-side" and art via Visual Communication studies.

Life Transitions & Losses

Although I was primarily occupied with IT and technology, I never lost my compassion or curiosity about the paradox between the strength and fragility of the human mind.
Between 2013 and 2015, while in my early 40's I made two major life transitions and experienced a huge loss. I was a bachelor for most of my life but quite suddenly met a wonderful person, got enganged, left Africa and my family behind and moved to Italy, got married and started a new life in a new country as a foreigner. The day after I arrived in Italy my father suddenly, but not completely unexpectedly passed away. Apart from dealing with that shock I also struggled with a new language, culture and found employment only two years later. In 2021 I became a citizen of my adopted country Italy. As soon as I started adapting to married life we as a couple were confronted by the harsh reality and difficulty of trying to start a family late in life and after a miscarriage with the eventual pain and acceptance that we wouldn't be able to. These experiences were tough but also enriching and the memories and lesson following from them absolutely worth it.

And then there was "Instead"

My mom passed away in 2020 soon after Covid-19 lockdowns hit the world which prevented me from visiting her or attending her funeral. The year after my boss died from cancer and due to Covid's impact on the tourism industry my role at our hotel reservation software company was made redundant. I experienced my 3rd major life transition the following year which involved buying a home and moving to another city. I arrived at the lowest point the next year after an unexpected seperation. The vacuums on multiple fronts at one stage brought me face to face with a question we avoid but should talk about more: "Is suicide a viable alternative to the pain and discomfort and apparent lack of meaning?" I was really hurting but not enough reason to motivate a "Yes". I rather wanted to understand why we end up in such situations and help others not having to even consider that decision. All the unfortunately situations ultimately brought about a renewed awareness of the importance of personal growth and mental health in our personal and professional lives. All the gushes of grief and loss moved air over a smouldering coal in the ashes of past passions and ignited a tiny flame. "Instead" appeared in 2024 as part of a Solution-Focused Coaching course I decided to take. Life happens while we make other plans. Will "Instead" be the avenue that leads me back to Psychology and complete the circle? Time will tell but for now it has given me "Mental Lift" - hope, meaning and satisfaction - just like a glider flight I experienced recently. I guess I now have some of the life experience I thought I needed. Time is limited and our health is not guaranteed. I have a desire to use the time I have left to share it with others and to and help those looking for solutions. Our world is experiencing a mental health crisis and in dire need of any help or potential solutions we can offer.

What I offer

I unfortunately can't offer any promise or guarantee that you will find a solution for every problem, but instead my full commitment to try and help you to do so, and do so positively. Having benefitted from it personally, I am also totally convinced about the effectiveness of the solution-focused approach.

Patient EAR and Temperament

I love learning from the experiences of people, so apart from reading I also like listening and fortunately have been blessed with a patient temperament which makes listening easier

heart

Compassionate HEART

I feel, care and want the best for every person and species on earth and dream of living together in peace without any form of suffering or abuse.

mind

Curious and Creative MIND

I have a curious mind that seeks, and loves, to understand and so I ask a lot of questions and love books and the internet because - yes you guessed it - I can find a lot of answers there. This often stimulates my creativity and a desire to express visually and seek solutions to problems hence: Ask • Seek • Find • Create

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

... and our best attempts at providing the answers

* This is an initial and non-exhaustive list and will expand in due course so please check back in future, or contact me directly if you have any specific questions

Is coaching confidential?

Our coaching is guided by the International Coaching Federation's (ICF) code of ethics and is strictly confidential. The only exception is disclosure of any aspects required by law.

What can I expect of the first session?

  • In the first session we will get to know each other and I will answer any questions you might have.

  • I will briefly share what the coaching process involves and the ethical aspects that guides and creates a safe and confidential environment for coaching conversations.

  • We will touch on some administrative issues to consider should there be any subsequent paid sessions and how to deal with booking cancellations and rescheduling should the need arise.

  • If you are comfortable to experiment we could even continue into an actual and brief coaching conversation in order for you to experience firsthand what it is like to be coached

How do we meet for the coaching session?

  • We will meet virtually via Google Meet video conferencing which requires only a stable internet connection, web camera, microphone and web browser with no additional software required.

  • The details of the virtual meeting and the link to join will be sent via email once you have booked a discovery call. Please keep an eye on your email spam folder should you not receive anything within an hour or two at the latest after making your booking

Can you guarantee a solution for my problem?

Unfortunately not for a number of obvious reasons. I can however guarantee to offer a solution-focus or future-oriented perspective to your situation, and to do whatever I can to support you in searching for, and finding the internal and external resources you posess or can acquire that is neccessary to identify and apply the solution(s) most valuable and suitable for you and your unique context.

How do I reach you if I have technical issues?

You can reach me via email; the chat functionality on this website you can find at the bottom right corner of the page; and I will also share a telephone number in the booking details should you have issues connecting to any of the online options.

How do I reschedule or cancel a booking I made

You will find cancellation and rescheduling links in your booking confirmation email. A cancellation will only be considered for a refund if notice of the cancellation is received at least 24 hours before the start of a booked session.

Why am I paying you if I wil be doing most of the work?

The beauty is you don't have to, and you shouldn't have to, and I wish you didn't have to - even if that meant I might have to close down shop. Just to clarify - I am referring to the "pay" part and not the work part.
If you want to affect change, growth or development in your life you will have to work at it which implies energy and effort. There are a lot of other coaches that will gladly offer you a general solution for exchange for your money and no or minimal work but don't be surprised when that solution doesn't last long.
